The Bus

Jerome Bettis (pictured above) plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have been my favorite team since I was about 5 years old. I remember walking into the room where my dad was watching TV and saw a football team with stunning black and gold jerseys. They were playing a team with light blue on their jerseys…. so…. the choice was clear… Pittsburgh was going to be my team. Today, I still have no idea why any sports team would wear light blue or orange… but that’s just me maybe.

If you’ve read the blog before, you know I was excited when Pittsburgh beat Indianapolis. Since then, my Steelers have defeated Toney Salva’s Denver Broncos and are now set to play in the Super Bowl in a few days. Cool.

Jerome Bettis is a good illustration of a strange phenomenon among sportsfans….. We often like players because they happen to wear the right jersey. I distinctly remember NOT being a fan of Bettis while he was playing college ball at Notre Dame. Then I remember also not being a fan when he was drafted by the Rams (in LA at the time). Then… Pittsburgh aqcuired him and WOW! He’s a great player and a great guy! Basically, all because he started wearing the right jersey!

Actually… Bettis does seem to be one of the good guys in sports today. The Super Bowl is in Detroit this year and Bettis is from Detroit and his family still lives there. It is likely this is his last game and he will retire as the 5th leading rusher of all time. As you can imagine… there are plenty of great stories leading up to his participation in the Super Bowl. I’ll link some below… not just about Bettis… and also invite you to join me in cheering for the Black and Gold if you haven’t already chosen a side!
