Mid-Double-Ten-Autumn-Moon Festival

October 5th, 2006 · 2 Comments

What happens when a holiday on the lunar calendar and a holiday on the solar calendar happen to fall 5 days apart?

Everyone gets a 5 day vacation, of course!

And that means that I can’t get my phone hooked up until next Thursday… grrrr.

Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival falls on the middle full moon of Autumn… TODAY! It is one of my favorite holidays in Taiwan as it involves much barbecuing and a late night out with friends and neighbors… out “appreciating the beauty of the moon”. We haven’t moved into our new place yet (LOTS of CLEANING and PAINTING to do first) but Bart told us that the community where we are living now has a big Moon Festival BBQ at the end of our street. COOL!

The other holiday is Double Ten day… and it falls on October 10th every year. It commemorates the day of the Wuchang Uprising when Dr. Sun Yat-sen formed the Republic of China. I’ll not go into the politics of all this now… but leave you these 2 links which will give the facts rather nicely:

Wuchang Uprising

Republic of China (link goes to the part about the beginning of the ROC in 1911… you might enjoy the rest of the lengthy entry as well.)

Happy Mid-Double-Ten-Autumn-Moon Festival everyone!

Happy Moon Fest! Any reason for a 5 day vacation works for us! Have fun at the BBQ! Blessings to all of you!

You’re lucky … my teammate had to wait almost three months before he could get his phone hooked up. His order kept getting inexplicably cancelled. He was pretty frustrated.
