I’ve been watching this DVD today while I catch up on some stuff on my laptop.
Delirious? put out some incredible music (IMO Stu G is probably one of the best guitar players in the world right now) and this DVD captures the passion of the band for Christ and for their music. I think… more than any other band… Delirious? captures the sentiments of my generation. As I read the scriptures, I see prophets crying out to God in ways that seem different than how I was taught to pray. I don’t believe there is a “right” way to pray and one of my favorite things about the whole idea of prayer is that there isn’t just one way… but my point is that in the scriptures we see God’s people crying out to Him in ways that seem like many churches today would disapprove of. When I try to hold all my questions inside… I’m left wanting more. Can’t I be myself before God? Can’t God take my questions? As Phillip Yancy writes in his book about the Old Testament, “The Bible Jesus Read“:
Far from my prior stereotype of fusty finger-waggers, I found the prophets to be the most “modern” writers imaginable. In chapter after chapter they deal with the very same themes that hang like a cloud over our century: the silence of God, economic disparity, injustice, war, the seeming sovereignty of evil, the unrelieved suffering that afflicts our world. These, the same themes that surface periodically in Job, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and even Deuteronomy, the prophets bring into sharp focus, as if examining them under a microscope. Prototypal books of Old Testament realism, the prophets eloquently express the doubts, pains, and complexities that we all feel-that I feel. I came to see them as acute witnesses to the dilemma of being human. (p174)
and here
To the prophets, God seemed to be pulling farther and farther away from his creation. Why do godless nations flourish? they asked. Why so many natural disasters? Why such poverty and depravity in the world, and so few miracles? Where are you, God? Why don’t you speak to us, as you used to. Show yourself, break your silence. For God’s sake, literally, act! (p175)
Anyway… in their music… Delirious? seems to bring an authenticity in their praise of Jesus and questioning and pleading and at times almost demanding to hear from God.
