Spiritual Abuse

February 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I keep thinking about some of the same things that prompted this post last week.

Paul Martin from Original Faith commented:

I think people just mean religious institutions, in contrast to what people sometimes discuss as spirituality.

Yeah… I think so too… but I still wonder what it is about these institutions that cause so much friction for people?

I’m thinking more and more about the idea of “spiritual abuse”. I’ve been fortunate not to have belonged to a church that has abused, but I’ve definitely seen some that probably do.

Strange that I’ve been thinking about this and then read a blog post from our friends Kevin and Pamela who serve in Uganda.

It is in the middle of this untitled post at the Ironside Chronicles so you’ll need to click and then scroll down to read it. Kevin references a series of posts at www.morrischapman.com. His name seemed familiar, but I was embarassed that I didn’t recognize the name of the head of the SBC.

I found the posts Kevin referenced and discovered that Mr. Chapman was basically posting content from a book called The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse (1991) by David Johnson and Jeff Van Vonderen.

I guess the idea of spritual abuse has been around for a few years… but it seems there is still much to learn.

Basically, Chapman recommends the book… I would too based on the excerpts that Chapman posts. It is a 3 part series:

What is Spiritual Abuse?

Characteristics of Spiritual Abuse, Part One

Characteristics of Spiritual Abuse, Part Two

I do enjoy your posts, sir.

My friend and I have found a pool hall we go to often here (in China) that is very very similar to the one all the guys on the 2004 trip went to in Taipei on one ocassion. I remember you and I were partners against I don’t remember who. And I remember we lost. But it was fun. Keep up the interesting posts.
