I have 3 comics on my MyYahoo page.
Andy Capp and 2 drawn by Johnny Hart: The Wizard of Id and BC.
On Saturday, April 7, Mr. Hart passed away after suffering a stroke while sitting at his drawing table.
Here is his last Easter cartoon (click on it for a bigger and more readable version)
He was loved by many… but lately not so loved by some newspaper editors who found it necessary to censor his blatant pro-Christian “propoganda” which he draws at Christmas and Easter - the other 363 days of the year is the normal hilarity and understated thoughtfulness. The LA Times moved his strips to the Religion section of the paper. How tolerant…
He was friends with Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and when Schulz passed away a few years ago Hart made a deliberate effort to write enough strips for his comics to continue after his passing. So we can look forward to more from Hart although I’m not sure how far ahead he drew. His children were also very involved in his work and it isn’t unreasonable to think that one of his children may continue the strips.
I wish I could find a link to a page that had all of his special Easter and Christmas comics… but I can’t and I dont’ want to spend a lot of time on it. Let me leave you with a bunch of links for you to get some more information on this great artist.
Michelle Malkin has a great post with lots of links and tributes.
Christianity Today has an article about Hart from 10 years ago.
Hogan’s Alley (Online Magazine of the Cartoon Arts) has an undated interview
Creator’s Syndicate has a wonderful memorial page with comments and tributes from several fellow cartoonists including this from Jim Davis (Garfield):
My favorite times at the B.C. Open [a golf tournament held in Endicott, NY from 1971-2006] were when I got to play with Johnny. There was one time that was the highlight of my golfing career. We were playing with John Daly, who, if you know anything about golf, is one of the longest driving players in the game. We were hitting off the amateur tees and he was hitting off the pro tee about 50 yards back, and he had a bad hit with his iron. I crushed my driver from the amateur tee and out drove him by about 5 feet. As we got closer to the fairway Johnny kept poking me and saying ‘You’ve got to say it, Jim! You’ve got to say it!’ So when we got up there I looked at John Daly and said, ‘You’re away, John’, and Johnny and I laughed and laughed like two grade school kids.
Where are the Christian artists who will fill Johnny Hart’s shoes?

I just looked at MY Yahoo at which cartoons I had. B.C., Wizard of Id and Close to Home. I used to have Fox Trot on there until he went to a Sunday only strip. I found it interesting how our similar tastes once again exposed themselves.
