Fat Guy update

May 18th, 2007 · No Comments

I thought this would get missed if I just added it to the Running For Fat Guys post down below so I’m making a new post.

Michael from Seday in Taiwan commented asking me about my shoes and also quoting Donkey from Shrek… cool.

As I told Michael… I’m actually embarassed to share about the shoes I bought because they are just basic shoes and more than anything it shows just how bad my previous shoes (all my life) have been.

They are New Balance 660. They sell for about US$65 in America… but I found them locally for NT$1400 which is about US$45. Shoes are actually a good deal in Taiwan. My local sports shoe store shopkeeper was really patient with all my questions and very helpful in picking out the right shoes for me. I decided to trust her judgement and when I felt how comfortable the shoes were I just decided that it would be better to buy them right away and start running instead of keep waiting and making excuses. I wore them home and tried them out by climbing 40 flights of stairs with no pain. I was amazed and thankful.

These shoes are not top of the line, but they are by far the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn and my feet send me little notes of thanks almost daily.

Seday in Taiwan has a lot of relevant stuff about running in Taiwan and about other expat perspectives of our island home. He mentions a run around Green Island in September and I’m going to try to find out more information about that as it sounds like a good goal for me now that the 101 climb is past.

In this post, Seday talks a bit about how he started running in Taiwan and he gives a link that I had found and lost. It was the first running plan I saw that I thought could actually help me get started running. I found the other plan I posted after I lost the link that Seday gives… that plan is Couch to 5k and is similar to the link I gave in the other post.

The common denominator seems to be… get good shoes… get moving… slow at first… and have fun!
