SQJ Taipei

Today we are heading out of Taipei towards Ilan County and then south to Hualien County where we will spend a couple days in Taroko Gorge.

This spectacular site is a place that causes me to have mixed feelings… it is truly a world class geological wonder and should be a world famous tourist site. But if it were so, it would be much less fun for us to go there and “get away”.

Thanks to Mimi, we plan to stay at the 5-star Grand Formosa Taroko. I never thought we would ever stay there as there are more reasonably priced accomodations just next door to the hotel. However… I am not an idiot (although that is probably debatable!) and plan to enjoy the 2 swimming pools and the buffets and other things.

When my mom visited in October 2005, we went to Taroko and had a great time although a typhoon had recently passed through and the flooding meant that many of our usual attractions and hikes were inaccessable. As you can see from the slideshow… we still managed to have a great time and saw some awesome scenery!
