Parents of Missionaries

June 27th, 2007 · No Comments

What is tougher than being a missionary? Probably lots of things I guess… but one of the things on the list would be: being a parent of a missionary.

I’ll never forget sitting on Angie’s dad’s bed in June 1998 and hearing him give us his blessing - through many tears - to go to Taiwan. His body was almost destroyed by cancer at that time and he passed away about 2 weeks later. I can’t explain the peace that came with that blessing. I think of a scripture in Psalms 126:5-6…

Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.

I just found out about a website created specially for the unique needs/feelings/emotions that go along with being the parent or grandparent of a missionary.

The National Network of Parents of Missionaries

Mom… Dad… Patsy… Maybe you’ll find some good stuff there. I think it looks like a great resource.

The founders of NNPOM, Cheryl and Diane, are writing a book for parents of missionaries and they are asking for POM’s to submit stories that might help others in the same situation.

You can submit your stories and ideas through the POM website and you can also post in the comments of this post about the book at The Brigada Brigade.

This resource can only be helpful… thanks to Cheryl and Diane for the ministry of NNPOM.

Thanks also to all the parents of missionaries out there in the world… we love getting to know some of your children and working in ministry alongside them.

Biggest thanks of all?

Mom and Dad… Patsy… We know this isn’t easy for you. And that is the hardest part of all this for us. We love you so much and thank you for trusting God enough to let us go and to share in our joys about things that you can’t understand and in comforting us during times of despair and for not suggesting we give up while in the depths of such despair. We love you so much.
