Heading East

July 14th, 2007 · 1 Comment

We have a group of high school and college students here with us now. They arrived on July 11th and will be in Taiwan almost a month.
I’m taking them over to Lotung and then Taroko Gorge and then on to Taidong. We’ll be gone a total of 9 days. I think I’ll have my computer, [...]

Pownce Invites Available

July 11th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Pownce is a new “micro-blogging” application. Twitter is probably the best known of these apps. Jeff at Missionary Geek blogged a bit about Pownce and offered an invite.
From the Pownce website:
Pownce is a way to send stuff to your friends. What kind of stuff? You can send just about anything: music, photos, messages, links, events, and [...]

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

July 10th, 2007 · No Comments

Janine Cate at Why Homeschool found the video I’ve embedded below. The post on her blog doesn’t have the video so I’ve embedded it here.
FROM GOOGLE VIDEOSir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining (and profoundly moving) case for creating an education system that nurtures creativity, rather than … all » undermining it. With ample anecdotes and witty [...]

2007 Tour de France

July 9th, 2007 · No Comments

I admit I struggle with this kind of post… I’m totally swamped right now… just back from TMF… the CIY group (of 15) here in 2 days… massive travel plans being made… budgets… emails to be answered… etc. But I can’t stop thinking of “Le Tour”. I wish I had the discipline to put it [...]

Taiwanese Fertility Rates

July 9th, 2007 · No Comments

I don’t really have much to add to feiren’s post at Rank about Taiwanese Fertility Rates.
I’m glad to see that fertility rates are relatively high somewhere in Taiwan. Here in the city (Taipei), it is rare to find people with 2 kids… hardly ever 3.
Interesting map…

Who Was General Tso And Why Are We Eating His Chicken? (washingtonpost.com)

July 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Although it is a bit old (2002), here is a fun and informative article about the famous (in America) General Tso’s Chicken.
Seems like it might have originated in Manhattan…
Each evening, thousands of Americans drift into Chinese restaurants or, if they are too lazy to go out, pick up the phone and order one of the [...]

Notice the shared items?

July 5th, 2007 · No Comments

After talking to a couple RLP (real live people) who read this blog… I discovered that they really hadn’t noticed the “shared items” section in the middle column. I added it when I changed the blog format a few weeks ago. The section title is “Recently Read Elsewhere”.
If you use Google Reader as your blog/news [...]

@ TMF Summer Conference this week

July 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Our entire family is in Taichung for the annual Taiwan Missionary Fellowship summer conference. We’ll be here until Saturday AM (July 7).
We love the TMF conference!
Our 2 oldest kids basically learned to swim during previous years at the conference. The pool is open from 2-5PM each afternoon and we are usually there the entire time.
There [...]

Maybe I Was Wrong…

July 1st, 2007 · No Comments

When I read Sandy’s post about the kids in the pool I thought maybe I was crazy… or maybe kids are learning to swim now…
