Angie was talking to Alicia on the phone the other day and Mollie (2 1/2 years old) was posted right beside here saying 『媽媽! 媽媽!』which sounds almost like “Mama! Mama!” in English except it was clear she was using Chinese. It is hard to explain but those who live in Taiwan or who have lived in Taiwan can notice the difference.
After Angie hung up the phone… Mollie looked up at her and said the mix of Chinese and English in the title of this post. 我要 = I want. Then the 哦 at the end is a sound that is often appended onto the end of a word or sentence that ends with a consonant sound. There are only a couple of them in Chinese, but obviously there are countless words like that in English. Telephone being one.
Funny thing is that Mollie could have said that whole sentence in Chinese, but chose to mix the 2 languages. She does that often and knows it is cute… which it is!

how neat!! i would LOVE to be able to raise my children (if the Lord gives me a family one day) to be bilingual (or even trilingual) kids.

Just looking at those Chinese words makes me tired! I’m so thankful that God has called us to a country that speaks a language with a similar alphabet!
