First 10 Songs

March 4th, 2008 · 5 Comments

OK Jen… I’ll play your little game and invite my 3 readers to do the same in my comments and on their own blogs.

Read Jen’s post if you want to know some of the more detailed rules but basically this is how it works:

  • open up the digital media player of your choice
  • hit the random/shuffle button/feature/box/whatever
  • look at the first 10 songs and report them here in the comments and/or on your blog
  • don’t cheat
  • this will determine if you are likeable or not

Here’s mine (I’m a little nervous to execute the command) — – –

  1. Youth Choir - Why Are All the Children Crying? — This band later changed their name to “The Choir”. I’ve seen them live and that was a blast. When I’m working on something mentally taxing but can’t stand the silence and also don’t want music that interrupts me… I play The Choir.
  2. RIch Mullins - Creed — The live version from the “Here In America” DVD with comments before the song that are classic Mullins. I really miss Rich Mullins, but he gave us so much while he was here that we are still so blessed by his work.
  3. The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven — A weird song from the late 80’s… environmentalism and God
  4. Adam Again - Hide Away — Kinda cool this is on here as it gives me a chance to mention one of my truly favorite bands - the Lost Dogs - a “supergroup” with Derry Daughtery of The Choir and Gene Eugene of Adam Again and some other guys that I won’t mention since this is about my 10 songs. Gene passed away in 2000.
  5. Bing Crosby - True Love — yeah… you gotta problem with that?
  6. Day of Fire - Cut & Move — LOVE this song. I saw Day of Fire at Cornerstone 2005. I like all kinds of music, but this is my default. This song is playing right now and it rawks my fingers so much I can’t type.
  7. Lounge Worship - The Long and Winding Road — Lounge Worship is awesome… popular Xn songs and a few other songs performed in a way you’ve not heard them before!
  8. Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away — Thanks mom and dad for introducing us to Buddy Holly while we were growing up!
  9. Rebecca St. James - Pray — One of the only “girls” I like to listen to… used to like her more… but this song really is one of my favorites from RSJ.
  10. Seventh Day Slumber - Every Saturday — I had to play this one out of order because I wasn’t sure what it sounded like and didn’t want to wait to write this post. I wish it was a different track… or a song from their first album… but… no cheating.

All in all… nothing I’m ashamed of… which certainly could have happened. Also, the 10 tracks do seem to capture my taste in music fairly well… in genre if not in specific artist preference. I do usually listen to music randomly so a run of songs as different as those in songs 3 through 8 is not unusual at all for me.

My last.fm profile is in the sidebar which will give you more info about the music I listen to… you might find something you like…

You don’t have to comment on your tracks like I did… but let’s see the songs.

    1. Free Me - Otis Redding (my motown fav)
    2. Take My Hand - Shawn McDonald
    3. Promising Light - Iron & Wine (the best)
    4. Wisconsin - Bon Iver (possibly the greatest album of 2008)
    5. some track off of Lars and the Real Girl Soundtrack
    6. The Sky is Blue - Winetree (A group of friends who now live in Joplin)
    7. Poverty - Jason Upton
    8. Know - Nick Drake (simply amazing)
    9. Ballad of a Thin Man - Bob Dylan (my idol)
    10. Che Gelida Manina - Luciano Pavarotti (it just wouldn’t be Italy without him…)

Yay! Finally proof that anyone actually reads my blog! I haven’t even heard of half your songs but you have to respect someone that has a song with the title “Monkey gone to Heaven”. And really all you’d have to say was Bing Crosby and you’d be cool in my book!

Fun game. So, out of over 3700 tracks in my iTunes, here are the first 10 that randomly popped up (with some comments):

    My Top 10 Random Songs:

    1. David Foster - Love Theme From St. Elmo’s Fire – Foster is a Canadian pop/classical composer. I’ve never seen the movie St. Elmo’s Fire. This track just happened to be on one of his CD’s I bought years ago (like 20+ years ago, when I bought my first CD player).
    2. Thin Lizzy - Fight or Fall – OK, so I’m a child of 70’s (classic) rock. I’m surprised this was the only song from that era/genre that popped up. This track is from their “Jailbreak” album, on which they also released the more memorable “The Boys Are Back In Town”.
    3. Glenn Kaiser – Witness Cloud – my former “pastor-turned missionary-turned pastor” friend gave me “The Blues Night” live album some years ago, with great tracks by Darrell Mansfield, Glenn Kaiser, Trace Balin, and Larry Howard. Highly recommended.
    4. Diana Krall – Dancing In The Dark – Canadian born and raised, Diana has had great success in the past few years as a jazz singer. I especially love her version of “The Look of Love” (which was featured in a Chrysler car commercial some years ago), but unfortunately it didn’t pop up in the random play.
    5. Dan Fogelberg – The Higher You Climb – I’ve long been a DF fan. I was shocked to discover just today, while reading his bio that displayed on my last.fm list that he had passed away just this last December!! I am in mourning….
    6. Eden’s Bridge – Tell Me Now – Eden’s Bridge is a Celtic-style folk/pop band. They released this worship album a few years ago.
    7. Regina Spektor – On The Radio – I discovered Miss Spektor serendipitously through a YouTube video. I like her quirky style. Sort of like a Nora Jones on uppers…
    8. Eden’s Bridge – I Exalt Thee (For Thou, O Lord) – OK, I like Eden’s Bridge, but not that much. Their twofold appearance on this random playlist is highly disproportionate to the actual time I spend listening to them.
    9. Harvey Reid – Off To Adventure – Reid is a multi-talented instrumentalist (guitar, banjo, dulcimer, etc.) American folk singer. I just have one album of his, which I picked up at the Winnipeg Folk Festival years ago….
    10. La Dona – Gipsy Kings – I love a variety of World music, and the Gipsy Kings have been a part of that diet for years. I think my overall favorite song from their work is “Hable Me”.

I’m surprised that nothing by Canadian political folk/rock singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn didn’t get on the list, as he is my all-time, long-time favourite. I have more songs of him than anyone else in my media player (and in my head).
